9 important competencies to become a compenent pilot
We got the license but are we a competitive pilot? Getting flight training and Pilot licence is the part of that long journey. There are 9 competencies to become a compenent pilot.
- Situational Awareness
A competent pilot must be aware of the state of the aircraft, flight path, terrain and the avionic systems. By keeping the track of time an fuel must ensure the continuity of the flight as well.
Comprehending and perceiving all of the relevant information and anticipating what can happen that may affect the operation is under responsibility of the pilot in command.
- Teamwork and leadership
A pilot must know the importance of team working and leadership. Pilot in command must not hesitate when using initiative or giving directions. While creating a supportive environment in the cockpit and maintaining an attitude that open to communication he or she must encourage team members to participate in the operation.
While leading the crew the pilot must also volunteer to help and carry out the instructions when needed.
- Communication skills
During the flight pilot must use proper vocabulary and direct the required message clearly to the ATC or other crew members. If he or she is in doubt with the transmission of the message, must check the understanding of the information and try to resolve the ambiguity.
Correct usage of body language during the communication in the cockpit is also effective and it must support the message.
Pilots must listen actively and demonstrate he or she understands the past information from crew members of ATC.
- Managing the workload
A competent pilot must correctly and efficiently manage the available resource and perform the required tasks in punctual manner under normal or non-normal circumstances.
Managing the workload starts with focusing in the task management and remaining methodical. Planning, prioritizing and scheduling tasks are steps of it. Pilot must use the all available resources to fulfil tasks. After planning and prioritizing he or she must review and cross-check the actions.
- Problem solving – Decision Making
In order to identifiy risks and resolves for them the pilot must use the proper decision making process. Most important step of solving a problem is understanding the problem and figuring out the reason of it.
Identifying and considering options effectively and assigning tasks while communicating decisions made are crucial for problem solving. In order to ensure safety decision made for a certain problem must be the absolute solution.
- Flight Management (Manual)
Since aircrafts can be flown by hand as well as autopilot a competent pilot must be competent by the means of controlling the aircraft manually under any circumstance. While keeping the aircraft in the normal flight envelope pilot must also detect the deviations from the planned flight path and correct the route accordingly by manual controls.
Since the automated systems can fail during the flight a pilot must always be ready to manage the flight manually.
- Flight Management (Auto)
A pilot must be able to execute a flight by using the automated flight controls and flight management systems. Just as we said in the manual flight management the pilot must detect the deviations from planned flight path and correct this deviations by using the automated flight controls. Selection of required level and mode automation is under responsibility of pilot in command.
- Knowledge
A competent pilot must identify and apply procedures according to prevailing conditions. The selection and variety of the applicable procedures must be known by the pilot. Gathering the needed information can be done by following the SOPs unless another, higher degree, safety information provider is present. The instructions gathered from the SOPs or other sources must be applied in a timely manner.
- Application of Procedures
After identifying the required procedure for current condition pilot must apply the procedure correctly according to the published operating instructions. While complying with the published operating instructions he or she must also comply with the applicable regulations via using the proper knowledge.
