What are ATPL exams?
In order to acquire a full ATPL license the ATPL exams are required and are the first steps of a professional pilot training. ATPL exams are referred as Airline Transport Pilot’s License exams. Theese exams are consist of 14 subjects which are; Airlaw, Instrumentation, Airframe, Systems Engines and Electrics, Mass and Balance, Human Performance and Limitations, Flight Planning and Monitoring, Performance, General and Radio Navigation, Meteorology, Operational Procedures or Ops, Principals of Flight, IFR and VFR communication.
In this 14 exam you will have to answer total of 682 questions and it will take 18 hours. Fortunately you don’t have to take all exams in one sitting. There are several sittings you can use and divide your subjects between them which we will talk about later on this text.
Students have 18 months to take and pass all 14 exams. And for each subject you have 4 chances to fail. If you fail a subject more than 4 times you have the start all from the beginning.
How hard are exams?
ATPL exams are usually the hardest part of the theoretical training according to the students. The goal of these exams is eliminate who don’t have the requirements to be a pilot. Therefore the exams must be hard enough.
Generally cadet pilots have a full-time job they need to keep up with and a hard exam can be a painful with a full-time job. Therefore a perfect studying routine and good source of information is required for ATPL exams.
A cadet pilot must get at least 75% in all 14 exams. Some of the airlines will require at least 90% average for employment.
Requirements for ATPL exams
Even though ATPL exams are already a requirement for further training, in order to take the exams there are other attributes that required. The cadet must be at least 17 years old at the day which she or he enrolled for the exams. A valid PPL (A) license is also required for ATPL (A) exams.
Since the all subjects and exams are in English you must be proficient in the English. To prove that you are good enough you must get at least 4 out of 6 in the ICAO English Language Proficiency exam.
Where and how to take ATPL exams? Best way to study
There are several options when taking the ATPL exams or studying for them. We will start with taking the exams first.
In the EASA zone you can choose where to take the exams by the means of country basis. Different countries have different ways of exam sittings. And different countries will have different frequency of exams. You can find the one suiting for you routine and choose according to that.
While studying for the ATPL exams you can study with distance learning or classroom study. Most of the students choose to study with distance learning since it is better to study with a full time job. You can decide when to study yourself with distance learning but during classroom study you won’t have that privilege.
During distance learning you can choose your own source of information. Even though the information is the same in all of the books or web sites the way they introduce you with the information is different. You must pick the one fits your understanding.
Way of studying
Different courses have different ways to study. Some students prefer to memorize the questions and rush through the subject books and some students prefer to study only from the books.
The best way to study for the exams are doing the both. First you can learn the subject from the related book and afterwards you can solve the related questions. While doing this you will be familiar with the questions and even though you see a completely new question you won’t have any problem solving it since you already studied from the book and you know the subject. Padpilot or Aviationexam can be given as an example for these programs.
Dividing the subjects
While studying for the exams it is better to divide and group the subjects. It is completely improper to take all 14 exams in one sitting. You must not forget that you have 6 sittings for all of the process but 4 sittings for each subject.
For better grouping you should consider the similarities between subjects. You can group the subjects that are easier together. According to observations done by our students for example Airlaw, Human Factors, Ops and IFR and VFR Comms can be counted as the first group since they are one of the easiest subjects according to most of the students.
Before the exam
10 or 15 days before the exam sitting you should practice with solving the questions from question data banks. This will help you to get familiar with the exam conditions. Creating an exam environment in your room will also help you to get used to the exam room. You can also try to solve the same amount of random questions in the same amount of time with the real exam during your practices.
