Flight Instructor TOP 7 Required Attributes

One of the most crucial factors in flight training is the flight instructor. A flight instructor should always remember that he or she is the role model of the student. Therefore an FI must have perfect approaches towards the student pilot. There are certain methods for teaching and training students. Here are most important 7 methods and approaches that should be obtained by flight instructors.

  1. People Skills
People skill is the talent of interacting, understanding, talking and connecting with people. A professional and effective instructor should be able to relate well with people. A flight instructor may have all the information in the World about aviation and aircrafts but this information is only useful if he or she can communicate correctly with students. Communication is one of the most important part of people skills which will be discussed later on.   If the instructor’s people skills are not enough for passing the information to the student, the training will not be executed successful. Another people skill is challenging students while supporting them to learn flying. While trying to learn something an instructor must also put obstacles on the way of students in order to get them developed in problem solving under pressure.
  1. Subject Matter Expertise
Subject matter expertise is a term used for people who possesses a high level of expertise, skill or knowledge in a certain area. We can say that a flight instructor must be a subject matter expertise in aviation.   However the only area that flight instructor must be subject matter expertise (SME) is not aviation. He or she must also have information and knowledge about teaching. A strong motivation to teach and positive attitude toward learning is also needed to be a better FI.
  1. Preparation of a Lesson
A preparation for next lesson is crucial for flight training. If the FI doesn’t know what will be the main task of a training flight, the training flight will turn into a sightseeing flight. In order to prevent this, preparation must be done before the flight. This preparation must depending on the specific student and task of the day. A lesson planned for a student may not be appropriate for another since every person’s learning style is different. Therefore different lesson planning must be done for different students.   In practice generally a commercially developed syllabus is used. This syllabus is already has been selected by a school. Flight instructors use this syllabus in the flight training process but slight alterations can be done for different understanding manners of students.
  1. Proper Instruction Techniques
Every single human has a different type of understanding. Some understand better under pressure but for others pressure may show an opposite affect for example. A flight instructor must already have the knowledge of different understanding types and be ready for each type. Same subject may not be teachable with the same manner for different people. Therefore FI must be able to extend his or her limits for training with different people and a variety of instruction techniques should be usable by the FI.
  1. Use of Distractions
According to a research done by the National Transportation Safety Board in USA accidents following a stall or spin are occurred mostly when the pilot is distracted from the flying the aircraft. Every aviator should know that ‘accidents happen’ but task of minimizing the possibility belongs to the pilot.   In order to prevent accidents caused by distractions flight instructors must prepare the student for them. This preparation is provided by learning to divide the attention. Dropping a pen and asking the student to pick it up, asking to student to get something from the back seats, identifying terrain or objects on the ground, having the student do a series of S turns and asking for heading to the airfield can be given as an example for distracting.   The main aim of these distractions is teaching how to divide the attention between flying the aircraft and other tasks to the student.
  1. Effective Communication
As we said earlier communication during training is lethal for teaching. During flight training the main task of the flight instructor is passing the information to the student. This transportation can only be done by communication. Therefore communication is an essential skill for an FI.   Communication skills of an instructor may be affected by 3 factors;
  • Lack of experience: Lack of experience in instructing can be an obstacle for communication with student since the FI is not used to it.
  • Use of language: Generally the language used in aviation is English. Therefore the instructor must be fluent in English in order to communicate with the student.
  • Use of abstractions: Use of memorized phrases and terms can only refer one meaning. However abstract words can force listener to think about the subject. There of use of abstractions by the FI can increase the quality of quality therefore training crucially.
  1. Listening to the Student
A student’s main source of information about flying is his or her flight instructor. Students must and should ask everything they want to learn about aviation to their instructors. But it is common that a student is not being listened by the FI. This problem is generally caused by the lack of motivation of the flight instructor. A flight instructor is a role model of the students, as we said earlier. Influences and attitudes of an FI affect the student career path as well as status of its own. Therefore an FI listening to the student’s problems and questions is always one step ahead of who don’t.
