Choosing Best Flight School

During your career as an aviator, the first hard decision you will make is choosing the flight school. There are plenty of flight schools around the world and every one of them have different specific feature. Some of them will have shiny aircrafts; some of them will have good prices while some of them will be close to your home. With all this options it will be hard to pick a flight school but we are here to help you.

Integrated and Modular training;

Two basic type of flight training are integrated training and modular training. First thing you should ask to a flight school is ‘do they have to type that fits me?’

These two programs can differ by pricing, duration and frequency of training. During integrated flight training the training schedule will be in a complete package. They are usually pre-structured and you will have to attend it non-stop. Modular flight training program has a free schedule. You can choose when to fly and when to not yourself. For example after flying for a week you can decide to give it a break and spend time with you family or job. Deciding for which program is better is up to you.

Pricing

Everybody knows that flight training is not cheap. If you have a scholarship or a sponsorship you may be lucky but those who don’t have them must scrutinize.

There is no one who wants to spend money for nothing while building up their career. Therefore you must be careful while deciding where to pay for your training. Different schools will have different prices and different payment methods.

With integrated program generally the price will be higher than modular program since it is a sustained program for the school. And you will be have to pay for a whole year or semester.

With modular flight training program you can usually pay as you fly. This type of payment is usually preferred by most of the students since it makes it easier for them. Student first pays for the enrollment to the flight school and afterwards she or he pays as the training carry on.

Location

Location of the flight school is not as important as the price or type of program but is also essential. If the flight school is far from your home or job you should consider that you will also pay for accommodation and travelling. If the flight school is in another country you must also consider about Visa requirements.

Another consequence of the location of the flight school is geographical conditions. The weather and terrain of the area nearby can also affect the training. You can gain experience from different weather and terrain conditions but it can also delay your training.

A rural airport and a busy airport can be also a factor. Some people may prefer a quiet airport over a busy airport since it can help focusing on the training but a busy airport can also be beneficial. Some flight training schools can provide landing on different airports with different intensity so that you can gain more experience.

Accommodation and transportation to school

You should consider that if the flight school has any accommodation provided or is there any affordable housing or hotels nearby. Some flight schools provide paid accommodation for 10 to 70 euros per day. Some of the flight schools have classrooms or flight simulators far from their bases. You should also consider transportation between them. If your transportation is provided by your school you are lucky. But if there is no need for any transportation since the all of the facilities are on the same airfield you are luckier.

What’s included and excluded

What’s included and excluded Some flight schools can trick the students with giving a low price and hiding the other costs such as fuel or landing fees. You should dig into what’s included and excluded from the given price.

Airplanes and maintenance

When it comes to safety in aviation there is no joke about it. Maintenance of the aircrafts is crucial for safety of flight. A quick research of maintenance conditions of the flight school aircrafts can be done for this situation.

In some schools the maintenance is done behind the curtains and the students will not even see or know when the maintenance is done. Meanwhile some schools have the maintenance station on their airfield. With this configuration you can see the maintenance is being done and be sure about the safety of your flight.

Additionally, the duration of the maintenance can affect the continuity of your training if the maintenance station is far from the airport. Therefore nearer the maintenance station higher the safety.

Maintenance duration can also affect the moral and motivation of the student. Imagine you are flying for you PPL training and your aircraft needs to take a routine maintenance. If the flight school doesn’t own its own maintenance station the aircraft must be send to a different airfield and it may take 10 to 15 days. This means you will not be flying for one or two weeks.
