A350 Freighter Version will be launched
Airbus is moving forward with plans to build a freighter version of its A350 passenger airliner, in the hopes of capturing a piece of the all-cargo widebody market long dominated by Boeing. The A350F’s introduction was expected, as Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury stated in April that the European aircraft manufacturer wanted to expand its presence in that market. “I do not like the idea weak in that segment in the future,” he said. “I think we have the right product to be able to be more aggressive in that market.”
Other than the fact that the A350 F will have a payload capability of at least “90-plus tonnes” and will be a derivative of the larger A350-1000, Faury provided few technical details.
“We used the building blocks of what we have done on the A350-1000 mainly but not only, and also the learning, the tools, the ways of working that we have developed recently with the Belgula XL,” he said.
He was equally coy about how many new widebody freighters Airbus hopes to sell or how much market share it hopes to gain with the A350F, saying only that production rates will be determined by the program’s “commercial success.” He explained, “The beauty of this program is that it will be embedded in the A350 production system.” “Due to the A350-900 and -1000’s commonality, we’ll put [the freighter version] on the passenger A350’s final assembly lines. As a result, we have no plans for individual freighter production rates.”
